Hebrews 10:1–18 | The Only Power to Really Change
The Only Power to Really Change
The Medical Narrowness of the Gospel
In a diverse city like Boston, saying "Jesus is the only way" can sound bigoted or close-minded. But consider this: medicine is narrow. If you have a specific illness, a doctor isn't being "mean" by telling you there is only one cure—they are being loving. Christianity isn't narrow because it’s cruel; it’s narrow because it is a rescue.
Effort vs. Experience
Most people try to reach God through one of two ways: Effort or Experience.
Effort is the outward attempt to be "good enough" to outweigh the bad.
Experience is the inward focus on how we feel about ourselves.
The problem? Neither works. They are like paying only the minimum balance on a massive credit card debt—it keeps the "creditors" at bay but never solves the heart of the problem.
The Seated Priest
Hebrews 10:1–18 tells us that while ancient priests stood day after day making sacrifices that could never take away sins, Jesus offered one single sacrifice and then sat down. His work is finished. This once-and-for-all sacrifice doesn't just "cover" our mistakes; it satisfies God and settles our hearts.
Inside-Out Transformation
Real change doesn't happen from the outside in. You can't just "act" your way into a new heart. Instead, the Gospel changes us from the inside out. The Holy Spirit takes God's truth and writes it on our minds and hearts.
We are "made perfect" in our standing before God while simultaneously "being sanctified" in our daily lives. This means you are 100% secure in Christ even while you are still growing.
