What Worship Teaches You
Beyond the Pedestal: The True Center of Worship
A recent viral video by creator Druski satirized the "mega church" culture where pastors are often lifted onto pedestals, becoming the center of attention. While it caused a stir, it raised a vital question: What is the actual purpose of a Sunday worship gathering?. As we dive into Hebrews 9:1-14, we discover that worship is not about us—it’s about the beauty and work of Jesus Christ.
Worship Reveals God’s Beauty
Under the old covenant, the tabernacle was filled with intricate, beautiful details—a gold lampstand, freshly baked bread, and an altar of incense. These weren't just for show; they were "shadows" intended to show us something about God’s nature. In the same way, our worship today—through song, liturgy, and creativity—is meant to give us a brief peek into the real beauty of Jesus, the light of the world and our daily bread.
Worship Exposes Our Deepest Need
Everyone worships. We all direct our attention toward something we believe will give us security, whether it’s a career, a relationship, or our own moral effort. We do this because we feel an inner "guilty conscience"—a sense that we are not as we should be.
The old covenant attempted to deal with this through outward rituals and animal sacrifices. But as the writer of Hebrews points out, these "dead works" could never actually make the conscience clean. Just as a bar of soap that kills 99% of germs can't make you perfectly clean, our best efforts always leave a "1%" of guilt we can't scrub away.
Access You Could Never Earn
The most life-changing lesson worship teaches us is about access. Under the old way, access to God was limited and fearful; only the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies, and he did so with trembling.
But in the new covenant, because Jesus shed His blood for us, the veil has been torn. We now have unlimited and free access to God. We don't have to dwell on our mistakes or pretend to be better than we are. We can go to God with joy because Christ has secured an eternal redemption with no expiration date.
